Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh?

Both are limestone landscapes a short drive from Hanoi, but they feel very different. How to decide, and when it is worth doing both.

The two most famous day-trip names from Hanoi are often mentioned in the same breath, and for good reason. Both are built from the same kind of limestone karst, rising in steep, forested towers. The difference is what surrounds them. Ha Long Bay is sea. Ninh Binh is rivers, rice fields and villages, which is why it is often called Ha Long Bay on land.

Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, and the way to see it is from the water. An overnight cruise is far better than a day trip: the drive from Hanoi takes around 2.5 to 3 hours each way, and the bay is at its most beautiful at dusk and early morning, after the day boats have gone.

Cruises typically include kayaking among the islands, a visit to a cave such as Sung Sot, and time on deck. The bay is popular, and the main routes can feel busy. Neighbouring Lan Ha Bay, off Cat Ba Island, offers similar scenery with fewer boats.

Boats vary a lot, from simple junks to small luxury ships with a handful of cabins. The choice of boat and route shapes the experience as much as the bay itself.

Ninh Binh

About two hours south of Hanoi, Ninh Binh is slower and more rural. Its core, the Trang An Landscape Complex, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. The classic experience is a rowing boat trip along the river at Trang An or Tam Coc, where local rowers often use their feet to work the oars, passing through low caves and between rice paddies.

On land, you can cycle between villages, climb the several hundred steps to the viewpoint at Hang Mua, and visit temples and pagodas such as Bich Dong. One night here, rather than a day trip, gives you the quiet of the evening and the early morning light.

Stays range from family homestays among the paddies to resorts set against the cliffs, and most are a short bike ride from the boat piers.

Side by side

The two places overlap less than their reputations suggest. One is about a night on the water, the other about days spent outdoors on land, and most travellers find they lean clearly one way once they see them compared.

  • Setting: Ha Long is open sea and islands; Ninh Binh is rivers, caves and farmland
  • Pace: Ha Long is relaxed but boat-based; Ninh Binh is active, with cycling and walking
  • Time needed: one night on a cruise for Ha Long; one or two nights for Ninh Binh
  • Crowds: both are popular; Lan Ha Bay and early starts in Ninh Binh help
  • Weather: storms can suspend Ha Long cruises, mostly in summer; Ninh Binh's rice turns gold around late May and early June
  • Travellers with limited mobility: a cruise is usually easier than Ninh Binh's steps and bikes, though boat boarding varies

How to choose

Choose Ha Long Bay if you want the scale of the sea, a night on the water and a slower, more restful stay. Choose Ninh Binh if you prefer being on the ground: cycling, small villages and scenery you can move through at your own pace.

If you have four or five days in the north, do both. A route of Hanoi, one or two nights in Ninh Binh, then a cruise on Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay flows well and avoids retracing your steps. If you'd like that built into a trip, we can plan it around you.
