Introducing Ninh Binh

Rice fields, river caves and limestone peaks two hours south of Hanoi, often called Ha Long Bay on land.

Ninh Binh looks like Ha Long Bay with the sea drained away and rice planted in its place. Karst peaks rise straight from flat paddy fields, and slow rivers wind between them, passing through caves so low the rowers duck their heads. In Tam Coc, many of those rowers steer with their feet.

This was once the seat of power. Hoa Lu served as Vietnam's capital in the 10th century, and its temples still stand at the foot of the mountains. The Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the countryside around it is best explored slowly, by boat and by bicycle.

Why go

Reasons to go

  1. 01

    Ha Long Bay on land

The same limestone drama, seen from a small rowing boat or from a bicycle on a raised path between the fields.

  2. 02

    An ancient capital

Hoa Lu's temples honor the Dinh and Early Le kings, and cave pagodas such as Bich Dong are built into the rock itself.

  3. 03

    An easy escape from Hanoi

At around two hours by road, Ninh Binh offers real countryside quiet without a long travel day.

Things to do

What to do in Ninh Binh

  1. 01

    Trang An by rowboat

Spend two to three hours on the water, gliding through a chain of caves and past temples you can only reach by river.

  2. 02

    Sunrise at Hang Mua

Climb roughly 500 stone steps to the dragon-topped summit for a view over Tam Coc's winding river and fields.

  3. 03

    Cycling the back roads

Ride flat lanes past duck farms, village houses and paddies, and stop wherever the view asks you to.

  4. 04

    Tam Coc and Bich Dong

Row the Ngo Dong River through three caves, then climb to a pagoda built in tiers into the cliff face.

Before you go

The practical details

Ninh Binh is lovely year-round, but its colors follow the rice. Late May to early June usually brings golden fields around Tam Coc.

Best time to visit

Jan–AprCool and green
Cool, sometimes misty mornings, with fresh green rice by March and April. Comfortable for cycling.
May–JunHarvest
Tam Coc's fields turn gold before the harvest. It is hot, so start early.
Jul–SepSummer
Hot and humid, with heavy showers. The landscape is at its greenest.
Oct–DecAutumn
Drier, cooler and clear, with soft light for photography and comfortable days on the water.

Getting there

By road
Ninh Binh is about two hours from Hanoi by private car, an easy first stop heading south or a two-day detour from the capital.
By rail
Trains on the north-south line stop at Ninh Binh station, a little over two hours from Hanoi.

Local tips

  • 01Take the Trang An boat trip in the morning, ahead of the midday heat and the larger tour groups.
  • 02Bring a hat and sunscreen. The rowboats have little shade.
  • 03Hang Mua's steps are steep and uneven. Go at sunrise or late afternoon, and carry water.
  • 04Stay at least one night. Day trippers leave by late afternoon, and the valleys are at their quietest in the evening.

Good to know

Visiting Ninh Binh

Should I visit Trang An or Tam Coc?

Both are beautiful. Trang An has longer routes with more caves and temples, while Tam Coc is shorter and runs past rice fields. With a night or two in Ninh Binh you can do both.

Is Ninh Binh better as a day trip or an overnight stay?

A day trip from Hanoi is possible, but staying overnight lets you see the valleys at sunrise and sunset, when the light is softest and the crowds are thinnest.

How fit do I need to be?

The boat trips are relaxed and suit most people. Hang Mua is a steep climb, and the cycling is on flat paths. We can shape the plan around your pace.

When is the rice harvest?

Around Tam Coc, the fields usually turn gold in late May and early June. Exact timing varies from year to year.
