Stone, water and a long, slow silence.

Introducing Ha Long Bay

Limestone islands rising from green water, best seen slowly from the deck of an overnight cruise.

Ha Long Bay is a sea of limestone. More than a thousand karst towers and islets rise straight out of the Gulf of Tonkin, their cliffs hung with jungle and hollowed into caves. Ha Long means descending dragon, after a legend of a dragon that scattered jewels across the water to hold back invaders. At first light, with mist sitting between the peaks, the story seems perfectly reasonable.

The bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam's most visited places, so how you see it matters. A day trip covers the highlights in a rush. An overnight cruise lets you kayak into quiet lagoons, watch the light change on the rock at sunset and wake to water that is almost still.

Why go

Reasons to go

  1. 01

    A seascape like no other

The scale of the karst landscape is hard to picture until you are inside it, with limestone walls rising on every side of the boat.

  2. 02

    Caves and lagoons

Sung Sot Cave opens into huge chambers of stalactites, and enclosed lagoons such as Luon Cave are reached by kayak or bamboo boat through a low rock arch.

  3. 03

    Quieter bays next door

Neighboring Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay share the same scenery with fewer boats, and many cruise routes now head there.

Things to do

What to do in Ha Long Bay

  1. 01

    Kayaking between the karsts

Paddle close to the cliffs, under low arches and into sheltered lagoons where the only sounds are birds and water against rock.

  2. 02

Tai chi on deck at sunrise

Many overnight cruises start the day with a gentle tai chi session as the mist lifts off the bay.

  3. 03

The view from Ti Top Island

Climb the steps to the summit for a wide view over the bay, then cool off at the small beach below.

  4. 04

    Floating villages and pearl farms

Fishing families have lived on this water for generations. Some routes visit floating communities or pearl farms to show how that life has changed.

Before you go

The practical details

Ha Long Bay is open all year, but the weather shapes the experience. Spring and autumn usually bring the calmest seas and clearest views.

Best time to visit

Mar–MaySpring
Warm and generally calm, a good time for kayaking. Early morning mist is common.
Jun–AugSummer
Hot and humid, with the warmest water for swimming. Tropical storms can bring rough weather, and the port authority sometimes suspends sailings.
Sep–NovAutumn
Warm days, lower humidity and often clear skies. Storms are still possible in September.
Dec–FebWinter
Cool and misty, sometimes cold on deck in the evening. Moody, atmospheric and less crowded.

Getting there

By road
The expressway from Hanoi takes around two and a half hours to the cruise ports at Bai Chay and Tuan Chau. A private transfer is the simplest option.
By air
Van Don International Airport, roughly an hour from the main cruise ports, has domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and other cities.

Local tips

  • 01Choose an overnight cruise over a day trip if you can. The bay is at its best early and late, after the day boats have gone.
  • 02Pack a light jacket from December to March. Evenings on deck can be cooler than in Hanoi.
  • 03Bring sandals with good grip for kayaking and the wet paths inside caves.
  • 04Cruise routes depend on weather and port authority rules, so schedules can shift at short notice in storm season.

Good to know

Visiting Ha Long Bay

Is a day trip to Ha Long Bay worth it?

It is possible, but you spend around five hours on the road for a few hours on the water. An overnight cruise gives you sunset, sunrise and the quieter corners of the bay.

What is the difference between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay?

They share the same limestone scenery. Lan Ha Bay, near Cat Ba Island, tends to see fewer boats and has good kayaking and small beaches. We can talk through which suits your dates when you enquire.

Can cruises be cancelled because of the weather?

Yes. The port authority can suspend sailings during tropical storms, most often between July and September. We'll confirm how changes are handled for your dates when you enquire.

Can I swim in Ha Long Bay?

Swimming is possible at designated beaches and some cruise stops, mostly from May to October when the water is warm.
