Overview

The journey

Ninh Binh and Ha Long are the same geology seen two ways — one standing in rice fields, the other standing in the sea — and this is the itinerary that puts them side by side.

Two nights in Hanoi cover the Ho Chi Minh complex, the Temple of Literature, a water puppet show and a full day south at Hoa Lu, Trang An and the five hundred steps of Mua Cave. Then the expressway east, a night aboard in the bay, tai chi at sunrise, kayaks at Luon Cave and a brunch that ends at the harbour, with a transfer straight to the airport.

Pace
Two nights in Hanoi, one aboard. One hotel change in four days.
Best for
Travellers who want the karst country on land and on water, and the bay at dawn.

Highlights

  • Hanoi's landmarks: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature
  • A water puppet show, an art form that grew out of the rice fields
  • Hoa Lu ancient capital and a sampan through the Trang An water caves
  • Five hundred steps up Mua Cave for the view across Tam Coc
  • A night aboard in a cabin with a balcony on Ha Long Bay
  • Sunrise tai chi, then kayaks into the Luon Cave lagoon

Good to know

Questions

Why does the cruise come last?

Because the bay at sunrise is the strongest thing in the itinerary and a transfer straight from the harbour to Noi Bai costs you nothing. Running it on day two would mean doubling back.

What flight should we book out?

Anything after 18:00 on day four. The boat docks at 11:30 and the airport is about two hours from the harbour.

Can the order of the days change?

Yes. The sequence of sights can shift with weather, traffic or opening hours, but the full list of included sights stays the same.

How are children charged?

Children aged 10 and over are charged the full rate. Children aged 9 and under are charged 75 percent of the rate, and children under 3 travel free of charge.
