Introducing Da Nang

A modern beach city between mountains and sea, with the Marble Mountains and Hai Van Pass close by.

Da Nang is the easygoing modern city of central Vietnam. A long run of sand stretches south from My Khe Beach toward Hoi An, the Han River is crossed by a string of lit-up bridges, and seafood restaurants along the beach road sell crab, clams and squid by weight.

It also makes an excellent base. The Son Tra Peninsula rises green above the bay to the north, the Marble Mountains sit on the road to Hoi An, and the Hai Van Pass climbs toward Hue. Plenty of visitors pass straight through. A night or two here is time well spent.

Before you go

The practical details

February to August is best for the beach. The rainy season runs roughly September to December, with the greatest typhoon risk in October and November.

Best time to visit

Feb–MayDry and warm
Sunny days and a calm sea. A comfortable time for both sightseeing and swimming.
Jun–AugSummer
Hot, dry and busy with Vietnamese holidaymakers. Reliable beach weather.
Sep–DecRainy season
Heavy rain, rough seas and possible typhoons, especially in October and November.
JanCool
Mild and changeable, with some showers. Pleasant for walking, less so for swimming.

Getting there

By air
Da Nang International Airport is about 10 minutes from the city center, with domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and international routes across Asia.
By rail
Da Nang is a main stop on the north-south railway. The stretch north to Hue follows the coast around the Hai Van headland.
By road
Hoi An is about 45 minutes south by car. Hue is two to three hours north: quicker through the tunnel, slower and more scenic over the pass.

Local tips

  • 01The Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water on weekend evenings. Arrive early for a spot on the riverbank.
  • 02Swim where lifeguards are posted. Currents can be strong, particularly in the rainy season.
  • 03Visit the Marble Mountains early, when the caves are cooler and the stairs are quieter.
  • 04Ba Na Hills and its Golden Bridge get very busy. Go on a weekday morning if it is on your list.

Good to know

Visiting Da Nang

Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?

Hoi An has more atmosphere; Da Nang has the bigger beach and more city comforts. Many travelers spend most nights in Hoi An and one in Da Nang.

Is the Hai Van Pass worth the extra time?

On a clear day, yes. The views along the coast are superb, and the pass adds relatively little time compared with the tunnel.

Is Da Nang good for a beach holiday?

From roughly February to August, yes, when the sea is calmer and the weather more settled. Later in the year, rain and rough water can limit swimming.
