Overview

The journey

Phu Quoc is closer to Cambodia than to Saigon, and it has spent its history making two things: pepper and fish sauce. Both are still made the way they were, in gardens and in barrel houses you can walk into, and that is the island underneath the resorts.

Day one runs the north — a sim wine still, the pepper rows, Dinh Cau on its rocks at sunset, and Grand World after dark. Day two is the south: the pearl farm, the fish sauce barrels, the prison, then a boat out for fishing and snorkelling, and Sunset Town for the last of the light. Day three is breakfast and the airport.

Pace
Full days, short distances. Nothing on the island is more than an hour from anything else.
Best for
Anyone finishing a mainland trip who wants a few days where the sea does the work.

Highlights

  • A sim wine production house, where the island's myrtle wine is made
  • The pepper gardens, and the reason Phu Quoc pepper is sold by name
  • Dinh Cau and Dinh Ba, on the rocks above the sea
  • Grand World after dark: the bamboo house, the Venice canal and the water music show
  • A pearl farm and a traditional fish sauce barrel house
  • Phu Quoc Prison, kept as it was through two wars
  • A boat day: fishing tackle, life jackets and snorkelling over the coral
  • Ho Quoc Pagoda, and the Kiss Bridge at Sunset Town

Good to know

Questions

Do we need a visa for Phu Quoc?

Phu Quoc has its own exemption: if you fly in from abroad and stay on the island, most nationalities can stay up to 30 days without a visa. Arriving from the Vietnamese mainland, your normal Vietnam visa applies. Tell us your route and we will confirm which one you are on.

When is the sea good?

November to April is the dry season, with the calmest water for the boat day. May to October brings afternoon rain and rougher crossings, and the boat day can be moved or dropped if the sea is against it.

How are children charged?

Children aged 10 and over are charged the full rate. Children aged 9 and under are charged 75 percent of the rate, and children under 3 travel free of charge.

Can the order of the days change?

Yes. The sequence of sights can shift with weather, traffic or opening hours, but the full list of included sights stays the same.

What do you need from us to confirm the trip?

A list of everyone travelling with full names, passport photos and gender, so hotels and any domestic flights can be booked.

Can you cater for allergies or dietary needs?

Yes. Tell us what you avoid when you book and we will brief the restaurants on the route and choose suitable dishes.
